What the history reveals
Fewer new labels.
More possibilities.
Later milestones often improve existing capabilities or connect them into workflows. Better performance can make additional work practical—even when the category names stay the same.
These counts describe this editorial selection, not all AI innovation. Range includes the “both” milestone when spotlighted, as does performance.

About the selection, dates and visual language
This is the existing Capability Overhang app’s 24-event Lite selection, with its September 30, 2026 research snapshot. It is a curated history, not a live feed or an exhaustive inventory of providers.
Range means new kinds of capability within this story. Performance means better quality or speed. Access brings capabilities to users; connection lets capabilities work together. Veo 3 is classified as both range and performance.
The starting bundle already included writing, reasoning, coding assistance, image generation, speech, audio processing and emerging music generation. A product milestone is not a claim that its provider invented the capability.
Dates refer to initial documented access or rollout. Some previews were limited by plan, geography, invitation or API availability. Month-only dates retain that precision. The source explanations preserve those access qualifications.
Spacing is editorial, not elapsed time. Arrows show the main direction of contribution, not measured magnitude; no growth multiple or universal quality score is implied. Fewer new categories near the end reflect this selection and its broad taxonomy, not proof that practical range stopped expanding.
